Why I'm Done Playing That Game
Let’s call it what it is: the classical headhunting process is broken. Worse, it’s stuck in a time warp.
I know this system inside and out. I’ve spent years on the traditional path: deep profiling, active search, first-level qualification, internal interviews, longlists, shortlists, the copy-paste CV template dressed up with new logos, three rounds of interviews, case studies, signature theater, and then, fingers crossed, the chosen candidate signs. All of this is followed by the keep-them-happy process through Day One and a 6- to 12-month guarantee period.
This entire machine takes six months. It took six months 20 years ago, and somehow, in a world that moves faster than ever, it still takes six months today. And that’s without accounting for the additional 6-month resignation periods most C-levels must serve. Add it up. That’s a full year lost in transition. In 2026, that’s not just inefficient; it’s reckless.
Sure, tech and AI have crept into the process, promising speed and smarts. Every week, another AI tool promises to “revolutionize” recruitment. Predictive fit. Personality scoring. Algorithmic shortlists.
But here's the inconvenient truth: they rarely deliver. Reading LinkedIn profiles doesn’t replace real insight. Predicting fit requires human connection, especially at the executive level. It takes someone who has been in those roles, understands the business transformations at stake, and can read potential between the lines, not just match keywords.
I’ve Been There. That’s Why I Do Things Differently Now.
After my corporate career, I reinvented myself as an executive search headhunter and became a partner at a boutique headhunting firm. During the five years I worked in this partnership, we continually asked ourselves how to challenge the big firms. We experimented. We invested in cutting-edge CRMs promising to automate our way to success. We became half recruiters, half software integrators, mapping our old-school process into high-tech tools built for volume. The result? Frustration. Overengineered pipelines. Cold leads. And candidates who walked away.
No matter how scientific we tried to make it, we couldn’t outperform the big players on tech alone. The big players had their brand, built over decades, on their side. Under the cover, they struggled with the same issues we did. And the clients? They couldn’t tell the difference. Everyone looked the same, with different logos, higher overhead, and longer timelines.
But the real red flag came from the candidates themselves.
Senior leaders were exhausted, frustrated, and disillusioned by the process. They didn’t want to waste their precious time in the "stone age" of recruitment. These are high-performers, C-level athletes in Finance, IT, Marketing, and R&D. They’re running marathons at sprint pace, chasing moving finish lines in an environment shaped by geopolitical shocks and the velocity of AI transformation.
They expect recruitment to keep pace with their speed. And when it doesn’t? They move on. Quietly Quickly.
So, Let’s Talk About Innovation, Speed, and Real Human Insight
This is where reverse headhunting comes in. And this is why I made the switch.
Today, I work differently. I don’t rely on massive systems. I don’t pitch 15 nearly identical profiles to see what sticks. I don’t copy and paste résumés into branded templates. I work directly with rockstars, people who are still in their jobs but ready for the next evolutionary step.
Here’s what modern executive search looks like to me:
- Human-first qualification. No automation can match the depth of conversation when it’s done by someone who’s walked the leadership path.
- Speed without compromise. My processes rarely take more than five weeks. Not because I cut corners, but because I know exactly what to look for.
- Future-focused placements. I don’t just ask, “Do they fit the role?” I ask, “Can they move the business forward over the next five years?”
- Uncomfortable but necessary conversations. Real consulting means challenging the assumptions of the management team and the board. Vacancy isn’t a gap; for me, it’s a chance to accelerate.
- Multidimensional candidates. A CFO today isn’t just about numbers. They might also be your future COO or CSO. That kind of value isn’t obvious on paper. “Classical” Headhunters match the current title with the current opening. They don’t take the time to read into the potential.
This isn’t recruitment. This is transformation, delivered at the speed of business, at a fraction of the normal headhunting fee, with the same quality of qualification and guarantee.
The Best Talent Isn’t Waiting, Why Are You?
Let’s be real: if you’re still relying on traditional headhunting, you're not just slow; you're already behind.
Today’s top leaders won’t tolerate a six-month process. They don’t have time to play the game. They’re in motion, and unless your search approach is built to keep up, they’ll be gone before your shortlist is even printed.
Reverse headhunting isn’t a trend. It’s what happens when someone who’s mastered the old way finally says: Enough.
I don’t use CRMs that cost a fortune. I don’t need AI tools to “score” prospects.
What I do is simple: I work with rockstars! Personally. Directly. And fast.
Because that’s what today’s talent demands. And it’s what real results require.
